Active shooter reports prompt police response in Windham, Maine

Police respond to active shooter reports near Hannaford in Windham, Maine; Route 302 partially closed

Police in Windham, Maine, rushed to the scene on Friday after getting reports of gunfire and a possible active shooter near the Hannaford supermarket. The incident led to a large police presence in the area and the partial closure of Route 302, according to local news outlet WMTW.

The road was closed at the intersection of Landing Road while officers responded. Businesses nearby were affected as police secured the area.

An employee at the McDonald’s located at 790 Roosevelt Trail told Maine’s Total Coverage that they heard several gunshots. The worker said heavy police activity was still happening outside the restaurant.

Some local reports also said that the shooting may have happened in or near the parking lot of a Burger King close to the Hannaford store. Because of this, several nearby businesses were placed under lockdown.

Witnesses share what they saw

Many residents and witnesses posted on social media about the situation. One person wrote, “There was just a shooting at Windham Hannaford, what is wrong with people? I hope everyone is okay.” Another described the scene, saying, “Everything is blocked and all businesses are on lockdown.”

A different social media post said, “302 is shut down at Walmart McDonald’s,” referring to the closure of the busy route.

Other witnesses claimed they saw one person shot in the Burger King parking lot. One comment read, “There was an active shooter. 1 victim, they headed to Raymond.”

Another reported seeing “a man lying in the road in front of Burger King.”

Police have not yet confirmed the number of victims or if the suspect is in custody. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have asked the public to avoid the area until it is safe.

Ongoing situation and community impact

The shooting and police response caused fear and disruption in the community. People who were shopping, eating, or working nearby were forced to stay inside as police searched for the suspect. Some described seeing officers with weapons drawn, checking nearby businesses and vehicles.

The closure of Route 302 — a main road in the area — caused traffic delays and made it difficult for people to get in or out of nearby neighborhoods.

Law enforcement agencies from surrounding areas were also called in to help manage the situation and ensure public safety. Police have not released details about the possible motive for the shooting or whether it was targeted or random.

Local residents expressed shock, saying Windham is normally a quiet place. Many said they hoped for the safety of those involved and urged others to stay indoors until the police give the all-clear.

The investigation will continue, and updates are expected from police once more information is confirmed.
